Contribution

  • The Importance of Heritage Protection for GlobaI Security and Development

This project aims to raise awareness on the value and importance of the protection of cultural heritage for global security and development in light of the UNSC Resolution no, 2347 of 24 March, 2017. The resolution condemns looting and smuggling of cultural property from archaeological §ites, museums, libraries, archives, and other sites. While considering such acts as serious threats to global peace and security, it urges the international community to develop broad law enforcement and judicial cooperation in preventing and countering trafficking in cultural property, Importantly, it also calls for information and data sharing as well as raising public awareness on the importance of lawful, transparent and diligent cross-border circulation of cultural objects. In this regard, the project endeavours to assess how and to what extent the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention actua|ly contributes or may contribute to the achievement of these global goals. The project also intends to share good practices in cultural property governance and trade, including due diligence and provenance research while acquiring cultural material.
