Graduated in LL.M. from UCLA and Juris Doctor from Chinese University of Hong Kong, Ms. Maria Goretti Tai researched into the intersections of international law and art law on the governance and statutory protection of cultural heritage.  Her dissertation “Custodian of Catholic Church’s Cultural Heritage” was a comparative study examining the Vatican’s stance in protecting Catholic cultural heritage against the parameters laid out in international law.  Her other research was on the phenomenon of luxury brands funding conservation projects of heritage sites in Italy, in relation to tax law, in search of a sustainable legal model.  As a public interest initiative, she hosted a public lecture for the exhibition “Ever Closer Union – The Legacy of the Treaties of Rome for Today’s Europe” in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome.  She also holds a Master in Cultural Experience Design and Management from Domus Academy in Rome, where she acquired professional knowledge on how to manage a cultural institution, develop and manage cultural programs.

Believing in the necessity of aesthetics in humanity and the intra-generational value cultural heritage brings to a community, Ms. Maria Goretti Tai is aspired to combine her knowledge in law, art and cultural heritage for the public good as her career goal.  Her interests in art and museum law range from legal issues like provenance, restitution, deaccession to looted cultural heritage, cultural heritage protection under armed conflicts and art crimes.  Being a pen-lingual speaker (Cantonese, English, Italian, French and Mandarin), she works at ease in a genuinely international environment.  Her purpose in life is to interpret the values of the past into the present and for the living. Understanding the past is the key to the future.
