Participation in the Academic Project is open to:
- universities holding cultural heritage law or similar classes, art law, art market, trade law, administrative law, international private law, international public law with a focus on the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention and other relevant instruments;
- other research or institutional partners: international and national organisations researching and working in the field of the international protection of cultural property;
- private and public sector groups and individual experts with an interest in the area.
Partners play an important role in promoting UNIDROIT’s activities and raising awareness on the major issues related to the illicit trafficking in cultural property worldwide. Partnership is granted on the basis of an expression of interest and proven participation in the advancement of the objectives of the Academic Project.

Contributions from Partners (either individual person(s) or organisations) may, for example, be in the form of the following:
- information on academic courses, expert meetings, workshops, training sessions to strengthen the understanding of country, regional and global legal issues in this field and/or on initiatives of legislative and regulatory domestic reform, or the preparation of instruments to be used in practice;
- contribution to the Academic Project information Platform by sharing knowledge products (e.g., studies, databases, training material, etc.) and updates in specific areas of national relevant legislation.

Leading partners contribute with information on ongoing projects and activities to disseminate/promote/use the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention and/or the 2011 UNESCO-UNIDROIT Model Provisions and generally strengthen the legal environment for protection of cultural objects and in particular restitution and return, such as
- provide active support by carrying out courses, seminars, research projects, events, etc. specific to the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention and its relations with other related instruments;
- documentation consisting in studies/research and publications including translations of relevant documents – especially the 1995 Convention and its explanatory report – into country languages for wider dissemination;
- organise contests relating to students’ work and finance a scholarship at UNIDROIT for the “winner” to work on the subject;
- take turns in hosting the Annual Conference. The Conference is hosted each year by a different Leading partner to the Academic Project.
Leading partners’ activities, including courses and seminars, are given particular advertisement on the Academic Project’s website. The works of deserving students from Leading partner institutions may be published on the website, under the section Students’ Papers.
Sponsors may contribute through a direct grant to the UNIDROIT Secretariat or by contract agreements with partners.The terms and conditions of specific contributions will be agreed on a case-by-case basis.
